My sister stole my husband three years ago, but when she returned to our family orchard with him, I discovered that their visit had a far more disturbing purpose.

My sister stole my husband three years ago, and I thought I had already survived the worst betrayal our family could endure. When Hunter finally returned for a family visit, she arrived with Raymond, my ex-husband, wearing the same confident smile that had once made me feel invisible. She asked whether I was still single, while Raymond laughed and insulted my appearance. I refused to give them the reaction they wanted. Then Dad stood up and announced that the county had contacted him that morning. Someone had submitted an application to transform our South Orchard into a private wedding resort, using his name without his permission. Hunter’s smile disappeared before he finished speaking. Suddenly, their unexpected visit seemed much less innocent than they wanted us to believe.

Hunter quickly called the project a surprise. Raymond, a commercial architect, had apparently designed six cottages and a glass ceremony hall for the property. Dad had spent forty years growing apples on that land, yet Hunter spoke as though the orchard had been waiting for someone important to give it a purpose. I questioned the application and noticed Raymond opening a leather portfolio. Beneath one of his architectural renderings, something red caught my attention. It looked exactly like my mother’s old farm-stand receipt book, which had disappeared after her memorial service.

I reached toward the portfolio, but Raymond immediately closed it and dismissed my concern. Hunter accused me of turning an ordinary family conversation into another episode. Dad refused to cooperate. With a county hearing scheduled for Monday, he prohibited anyone from entering the barn, bringing clients onto the property, or signing documents in his name. Hunter calmly agreed, claiming she and Raymond had only come to help. For a brief moment, I wondered whether their plans were simply an arrogant misunderstanding. That possibility disappeared eleven minutes later, when an unfamiliar woman arrived carrying a cream-colored invitation decorated with a gold apple tree.

The woman, Leah, had come with her mother to inspect the aisle before a wedding preview. Hunter greeted her warmly, behaving as though everything had already been arranged. Leah assumed I was the grounds manager, and my sister made no effort to correct her. I had spent years pruning those trees, rebuilding the farm stand, and helping our family survive two devastating frost seasons. Yet Hunter was already presenting me as an employee on land I had helped keep alive.

I explained that the property had never been approved as a wedding venue. Leah looked shocked and revealed that she had already paid a deposit. Raymond attempted to interrupt, while Hunter hurried Leah outside with promises of a telephone call. Watching them leave, I realized my sister stole my husband three years ago, but she now seemed determined to take something that mattered even more deeply to me.

Dad admitted Hunter had shown him sketches months earlier. He had agreed only to discuss a few possible weddings after harvest, not cottages or a commercial resort. He insisted he had never signed an application. Meanwhile, the familiar brass clasp of Mother’s missing receipt book clicked shut inside Raymond’s portfolio.

The sound brought back everything I had tried to bury. Raymond and I had been married for seven years before his affair with Hunter emerged through a hotel confirmation he accidentally sent me. He dismissed their relationship as a mistake between lonely people. Hunter described it as a love that had finally received permission.

Our mother, recovering from heart surgery, begged us not to spend her remaining years fighting. We called our silence peace. Hunter married Raymond the following spring, and Mother died six months later.

During her memorial, the red receipt book vanished. For nearly twenty years, Mother had carefully recorded every bushel, school tour, and harvest dinner. She never skipped a number, and I had searched everywhere for that book.

Now it was inside Raymond’s portfolio, beside plans for a resort nobody had authorized. I couldn’t understand why they needed Mother’s old records for a new wedding business—or what else they had already done without our knowledge.
