My son coded twice in the ICU while I desperately tried to reach his father, but the response I eventually received was something no mother should ever have to see.

My son coded twice in the ICU at 3:14 in the morning, and the sound of the hospital monitor flatlining is something I will never forget. One moment, my seven-year-old son Caleb’s heart was beating, irregularly and weakly, but still beating. The next, the room erupted into alarms and urgent voices calling a code blue in pediatric ICU room four. I was standing beside his bed, my hand resting on the metal railing, when I felt the vibration of the alarm before I fully understood what was happening. Nurses rushed through the doorway, one knocking a chair sideways in the urgency of the moment. Another arrived pushing a crash cart, followed by a resident who began issuing instructions before he had even crossed the threshold. Someone told me to step back, but I couldn’t move. My legs felt frozen beneath me as the medical team surrounded my little boy. Everything happened so quickly that I barely understood what I was witnessing.

A member of the medical team guided me backward until my spine pressed against the wall. From there, I watched five people desperately trying to restart my son’s heart. I saw the compressions, the equipment, and the movements of people trained to respond to emergencies that no parent ever wants to witness. The first cardiac arrest lasted thirty-eight seconds. I know because I stared at the clock above the doorway and counted every movement of its second hand. They brought Caleb back, and for a brief moment, I thought the worst was over. Eleven minutes later, his heart stopped again. This time, the emergency lasted almost two full minutes. I recognized the sounds now. I knew what the rhythm of the compressions meant, and I understood the frightening silence between the monitor’s beeps. I watched a nurse glance toward me with an expression that made my stomach drop. Eventually, the team restored Caleb’s heartbeat again, but he remained critically ill.

After the second emergency, the attending physician, Dr. Okafor, entered the room. He was tall and calm, with wire-rimmed glasses resting low on his nose. He studied the monitors, asked several questions, and gave instructions to the staff before turning toward me. Caleb was stable for the moment, he explained, but his condition would have to be assessed hour by hour. I asked what had happened. The doctor said they were running tests and adjusting treatment because Caleb’s potassium levels were abnormal. Then he looked directly at me and warned that the next few hours would be critical. If there was anyone who needed to be there, I should call them immediately. I understood what he was telling me. My son had already survived two cardiac arrests, and nobody could promise what would happen next.

I pulled out my phone, but my hands were shaking so badly that I could barely unlock it.

The screen was smeared with sweat, and I had to wipe it against my jeans before the fingerprint reader recognized me.

I opened my contacts and found a name I hadn’t called in four months.

Darren Whitmore.

Caleb’s father.

I pressed the call button and listened as the phone rang five times before going to voicemail.

His familiar recorded greeting sounded smooth and completely unconcerned.

I left a message explaining that Caleb had coded twice and was in the ICU at Mercy General.

I begged Darren to come immediately.

Then I called again.

And again.

I left another message telling him that our son’s heart had stopped twice and that the doctors were assessing his condition hour by hour.

I couldn’t understand why he wasn’t answering.

I called from the hallway outside the ICU, then from the family waiting room, pacing back and forth across the floor.

I called from the bench near the elevator and from a bathroom stall beneath buzzing fluorescent lights.

Between calls, I sent messages pleading with him to respond.

I reminded him that Caleb was his son.

I told him what the doctor had said.

Still, there was no reply.

No read receipt.

No typing indicator.

Nothing.

By four in the morning, I’d called twelve times.

By five, the number had climbed to twenty-six.

I eventually stopped counting because the unanswered calls were making me feel as though I were performing a desperate ritual.

But I couldn’t stop trying.

My son coded twice in the ICU, and I needed his father to understand how serious the situation was.

Then, at 5:47 a.m., after thirty-nine calls, I reached for my phone again.

This time, instead of calling Darren directly, I dialed his brother Mitchell.

He answered on the third ring.

I demanded to know where Darren was.

Mitchell hesitated.

And the silence before his answer told me that something was terribly wrong.
