My granddaughter called me at 1:58 a.m., burning hot and begging me to come get her. Chloe’s voice sounded thin and wrong, as though every word had to drag itself through mud before reaching me. I was moving before I was completely awake. Twenty-two years of instinct does not disappear simply because the rest of you is sleeping. I asked where her mother was and where her brother Wyatt was. Chloe whispered that Mommy and Daddy had gone to the airport. They had given her medicine so she would not be sad, she said, but she was unbearably hot.
I was out the door in less than two minutes. There was no coat and no carefully considered plan—only my old truck, the rain, and the promise I had made to Martha’s memory that I would never let anything happen to those children. My hands stayed steady. Years of service had taught me that shaking comes afterward, when the mission is over. For fourteen minutes, I drove through nearly empty streets with Chloe’s frightened voice repeating in my head. When I reached their block, my stomach dropped. There were no cars in the driveway. The house was completely dark, including the porch light Samantha normally left burning.
I still had the spare key Patrick had given me years earlier. The moment I opened the door, a strange sweet chemical smell hit the back of my throat. I called for Chloe and Wyatt, but only the rain answered against the windows. Then I found Chloe curled on the kitchen floor, soaked in sweat and frighteningly flushed. I picked her up and felt her pulse racing beneath my fingers. Then my flashlight moved across the kitchen counter and caught something that made everything feel even more wrong.

There was a bottle of adult sedative on the counter.
Beside it sat a sticky dosage cup and a neatly folded note written in my son’s handwriting. The message told me not to overreact. Patrick claimed they had simply given Chloe something to help her sleep and insisted she was fine.
But the final instruction was different.
Whatever Chloe told me, I was not supposed to believe her about the closet.
I stopped breathing.
This was not a hurried message explaining an emergency. It was a note positioned exactly where Patrick apparently expected me to find it, anticipating what Chloe might say before I even arrived.
Chloe’s fingers grabbed my collar.
Her glassy, terrified eyes opened, and she whispered for me not to open it. Daddy had told her that a monster would get them.
Then something scratched against wood in the hallway.
The sound was low and frantic.
A muffled thump followed, like a fist hitting a door that did not have enough room to swing properly.
I carefully lowered Chloe onto the floor, placed my jacket beneath her head, and promised I would return.
The scratching stopped the instant my shadow crossed the closet door.
I wrapped my hand around the cold brass knob and opened it.
There was no monster.
Inside was ten-year-old Wyatt, his wrists bound behind his back and tape covering his mouth. His terrified eyes were streaming above it as he sat completely still on top of a heavy steel box.
Red and black wires ran from it toward a small blinking timer.
The numbers were counting down.
I didn’t touch the box.
I removed the tape from Wyatt’s mouth slowly. He gasped and immediately told me he had not moved because his father had warned him not to.
I told him he had done exactly right.
Now I needed him to stay completely still for just three more seconds.
