Being called street garbage in a borrowed dress across a crowded dinner table should have broken me, but the smile forming on my face came from knowing he had no idea who he was humiliating.

My blood turned to ice when my boyfriend’s father called me street garbage in a borrowed dress across the silent dining table. William Harrington’s cruel eyes stayed fixed on mine as if he were enjoying every second of my humiliation. Twenty-three elite guests had gone quiet, watching to see what I would do. My heart pounded as his words seemed to move through the room in slow motion. His country club friends, business associates, and family members were all there when he announced that his son deserved someone better than a woman from the gutter.

Every pair of eyes moved between William and me. I could almost feel everyone waiting to discover whether the nobody dating his privileged son would dare answer him. Instead of exploding, I carefully folded the expensive napkin in my lap and placed it beside my untouched plate of overpriced salmon. Then I stood. I thanked Mr. Harrington for dinner—and for finally being honest about how he felt. My name is Zafira. I’m 32 years old and a self-made entrepreneur, but William’s expression told me exactly what he believed I was.

Quinn grabbed my hand and tried to stop me. I squeezed his fingers gently before letting go. I told him everything was fine and that perhaps his father was right—I should know my place. William’s smirk was impossible to miss. He looked like a man convinced he had won, certain that he had finally driven away the woman he believed wasn’t worthy of his son. So I walked out with my head held high, passing the Monet in the hallway, the servants avoiding eye contact, and the Bentley William had proudly mentioned cost more than he thought I could earn in five years.

Outside the enormous Harrington estate, I headed toward my sensible Toyota—the same car William had sneered at when I arrived.

Quinn caught up with me before I could leave.

He was crying as he apologized, insisting that he had no idea his father would say something so cruel. I pulled him close and told him it wasn’t his fault. Quinn wanted to confront William, force an apology, and somehow repair what had happened.

But I didn’t want another apology made on William’s behalf.

For an entire year, Quinn had been making excuses for his father. Now William had finally said openly what he had apparently been thinking all along.

At least we knew where we stood.

Quinn begged me not to let his father destroy our relationship. I kissed his forehead and reminded him that William couldn’t destroy something that was real. I promised to call the next day and drove away, watching the mansion shrink in my rearview mirror until its lights looked like distant stars I supposedly could never reach.

My phone began buzzing before I reached the main road.

I ignored it.

Perhaps it was Quinn’s mother trying to smooth things over, or his sister offering uncomfortable sympathy. They weren’t bad people, but they had spent too long being afraid to challenge William.

And after being dismissed as street garbage in a borrowed dress, I wasn’t interested in another explanation.

There was someone else I needed to call.

I merged onto the highway and voice-dialed my assistant, Danielle. She had worked with me for six years and knew me well enough to recognize immediately that something was wrong.

I told her I knew it was late.

Then I gave her one instruction.

Cancel the Harrington Industries merger.
