Older woman quietly staring at her son's illuminated phone while preparing soup in her kitchen as he approaches from the hallway.

I Read On My Son’s Phone. Don’t Worry Babe. I’ll Put The Old Lady In A Home. The Next Day, He Had No House, No Car, No Trace Of Me, And Their Bank Account Was At Zero.

When I accidentally saw “put the old lady in a home” on my son’s phone, I realized the people living under my roof might already be planning a future that no longer included me.

The words put the old lady in a home appeared in a message preview on my son’s phone while it sat face up beside the cutting board where I had just finished slicing carrots. The phone buzzed only once, but once was enough. Rowan’s name appeared on the screen, followed by words I knew I would never forget: “Don’t worry babe. I’ll put the old lady in a home.” I didn’t touch his phone. I didn’t gasp or call his name. The broth continued bubbling softly on the stove as I slowly stirred it, careful not to scrape the ladle against the bottom of the pot. The kitchen still smelled of onions and thyme, but suddenly I couldn’t taste anything.

Footsteps came down the hallway, and Rowan’s voice reached the kitchen before he did. He said dinner smelled great, walked in, and casually picked up his phone without noticing how still I was standing. He never checked whether I had seen the message. Why would he? In his mind, perhaps I was already halfway gone. Then he leaned down and kissed the top of my head with a familiar gesture that suddenly felt practiced and hollow. I didn’t flinch, but something inside me quietly collapsed. Rowan mentioned checking a bill online and left the kitchen. I listened to the stairs creak as he went back up.

I turned off the stove and let the soup sit. Their belongings seemed to fill every corner of my house—coats, shoes, coffee mugs, charging cords stretching from outlets. Yet suddenly everything looked like clutter occupying somebody else’s space. I felt as though my own presence was slowly being erased. I carried the pot outside to the back porch and emptied the soup into the compost bin, watching steam curl into the cold air. Rowan and Belle had originally arrived with only two suitcases and a story about difficult circumstances.

Rowan had lost his job because of downsizing. Belle said she needed somewhere to reset away from the toxic pressure of her own parents.

I didn’t interrogate them.

I simply opened my door.

I gave Rowan and Belle the larger upstairs bedroom with the view. I even surrendered the garden room where I used to read every morning so my granddaughter Sophie could have it.

I moved myself into the back hallway beside the laundry room.

It was supposed to be temporary.

At first, they seemed genuinely grateful. Belle baked muffins once. Rowan filled my gas tank. “Thank you” seemed to appear in every other sentence.

But their gratitude disappeared quickly.

Doors began slamming. Dirty dishes remained in the sink. Laundry was abandoned half-finished. Belle started telling me that I “wouldn’t understand,” while Rowan increasingly avoided looking me in the eye.

They stopped thanking me.

Eventually, they stopped asking before taking even simple things.

I still paid for the groceries and covered the gas bill. I continued walking to the post office every Tuesday, just as I always had.

But somewhere along the way, the house stopped feeling like mine.

It became a place I maintained for everyone else.

Nobody knocked before entering rooms. Muddy shoes accumulated in the hallway outside my door, along with unopened packages. They moved through my quiet as though it belonged to them.

Only Diego still seemed to notice me.

He asked how I was feeling. When he spoke to me, he lowered his voice, almost as if he was trying not to disturb something fragile.

I made him tea after school, and he sat at the kitchen table holding the mug with both hands, just as his grandfather once had.

Then Diego asked whether I missed reading in the garden room.

I told him I didn’t mind giving it up.

But the following morning, I caught myself staring at that room’s doorknob for a very long time.

And after seeing that message about how they planned to put the old lady in a home, I could no longer convince myself that these little changes inside my house meant nothing.
