He Said I Would Inherit the Business. So I Skipped College and Gave Him Ten Years of My Life. But in the End, He Gave It to Someone Else.

For ten years, I believed I would inherit the business I’d sacrificed my education, time, and energy to help build, until one announcement made me question everything my father had ever promised me.

I believed I would inherit the business because that’s what my father had told me when I was young, and I built the next ten years of my life around that promise. I skipped college and gave him more than three thousand days of work, including countless nights when I locked up after midnight only to return before sunrise. Every exhausting day seemed to be leading somewhere: toward a future, a legacy, and eventually my place at the head of our family’s business. My father, Gerald Kane, had started his custom cabinetry shop back in the 1990s, when I was still a kid riding my scooter through the sawdust behind the shop. He had built it from nothing, starting in a garage before saving enough money for a warehouse on the edge of town. I was genuinely proud of him and what he’d created.

That was why I didn’t complain when, after high school, Dad asked me to work for him full-time instead of attending college. He told me the business would someday be mine and questioned why I should chase a degree when I already had a future waiting for me. I believed him. I decided I’d learn the operation from the inside out—production, inventory, bookkeeping, customer service, and everything else required to keep the company running.

There were no impressive titles waiting for me, only responsibilities, and I accepted all of them. I learned payroll. I fixed broken machines. During one slow winter, I even built the company’s website myself. Year after year, I kept telling myself that I only needed to wait a little longer before Dad finally made everything official. Then, around my tenth year working there, my circumstances changed enough that I finally asked him for something.

My wife and I were expecting our second child, while our oldest was beginning kindergarten.

Money was tight.

I hadn’t asked for anything significant in years, not even when fuel prices made driving my rusty pickup to job sites increasingly expensive. But now I thought asking for a small raise was reasonable.

I wasn’t even asking to be paid the full market rate for the hours I worked. I simply wanted enough breathing room to support my growing family.

I remember walking into Dad’s office with my hands slightly shaking, reassuring myself that what I was requesting was reasonable—and earned.

Dad stared at me through the old wire-rimmed glasses he’d worn for years.

He told me it wasn’t the right time.

Then he said I should be grateful because I already had everything I needed.

Those words were difficult to swallow.

My family was living in a two-bedroom rental with black mould in the bathroom. My wife worked night shifts at the hospital. We rarely ate out, and I’d even sold my guitar to help cover a hospital bill after our daughter’s fever scare.

Still, I said nothing.

I nodded, walked out, and convinced myself Dad was simply old-fashioned. Maybe there really was a right moment coming. Maybe the sacrifice would eventually make sense when I finally inherit the business I’d spent a decade helping him operate.

Two weeks later, the “right moment” arrived.

My family gathered for a barbecue. My mother was there, along with my sister Amber, her boyfriend Josh, several cousins, and neighbours. There were burgers, cheap beer, laughter—the kind of ordinary family gathering where I wasn’t expecting my entire future to suddenly change.

Then Dad stood in front of everyone.

He tapped his plastic cup with a spoon to get their attention.

And as I stood there listening, he began making an announcement about exactly who would be taking over Kane Custom Cabinets the following year.
