I walked away from my marriage after finding out my wife was eight weeks pregnant by her affair partner, but the story didn’t begin with that devastating discovery. More than three years after I last spoke to my ex-wife, she unexpectedly contacted me and asked if we could talk. We spent an hour on the phone, and that conversation finally brought our sad, miserable relationship to its ultimate end. Until then, I had never shared my story. Reading about other broken marriages had given me some strange comfort because I realized how many similarities existed between what happened to me and what others had endured.
We met in Tennessee when I was twenty-two and she was twenty-seven. She was finishing nursing school, while I was completing my final year of military service. We both worked deliveries at a local pizza place for extra money, became friends, and after one memorable party, our relationship turned into something more. She pursued me, but I was attracted to her and happily reciprocated. When my military service ended, I took her to a nice dinner and proposed because by then, I was completely in love with her.
Our first year of marriage was great. Our families liked each other, and we did almost everything together. Then, during the second year, things changed. I was working full time while attending school at night for a civil engineering degree. I tried to make our limited time together special and romantic, but I could feel her pulling away. Eventually, I made a huge sacrifice: I dropped out of school because I believed my marriage mattered more and convinced myself I could always return later.

It didn’t help.
I began feeling as though I was trying to save a sinking ship alone. Gifts, vacations, and different attempts at romantic bonding couldn’t restore what was disappearing between us. She offered little help or encouragement, and eventually the warning signs became impossible to ignore.
She became protective of her phone and laptop. Her absences from home increased. Intimacy disappeared completely. Even when I tried to hug or kiss her, she responded coldly.
I suspected she was cheating and became determined to prove it, especially because we lived in an at-fault state. But she covered her tracks well, and I couldn’t find the evidence I needed.
Eventually, I began emotionally checking out too. I stopped initiating affection and barely tried to start conversations anymore.
Then she tearfully confessed to what she called an inappropriate relationship with a co-worker.
She insisted it had never become physical.
There were promises, apologies, and explanations. She said she wanted to save our marriage and suggested counseling. Despite my suspicions, I chose to believe her because my heart wasn’t ready to accept what my mind was telling me.
We attended marriage counseling for several weeks. The counselor began asking increasingly probing questions about her relationship with the co-worker, and my wife became uncomfortable. After only four sessions, she stopped attending.
Strangely, things then seemed to improve.
For approximately six months, it almost felt as though I had my old wife back. I was happy enough to bury my suspicions and convince myself we had survived whatever had happened.
Then the cycle started again.
The secretive behavior returned. She pulled away. I confronted her twice, but she dismissed everything as stress or blamed my immaturity because of our age difference.
Intimacy between us disappeared again.
I still didn’t have proof of what was really happening, but every familiar warning sign was back—and this time, the truth waiting behind them would finally make me walk away from my marriage.
