My Friends Thought It Would Be Funny to Push Me Into a Blind Date I Never Wanted. Just Another Joke at My Expense, but When I Sat Across From Her That Afternoon…

A blind date I never wanted felt like another joke at my expense, until the stranger walking toward my table made me wonder whether my friends had accidentally changed my life.

A blind date I never wanted was exactly how I expected to spend my Sunday afternoon, because my friends had made a habit of treating my single life like a problem they needed to solve. They called me the lone wolf and acted as if my preference for solitude secretly made me miserable. The truth was simpler: I genuinely liked quiet. I’d rather spend Sunday sanding a chair in my workshop, surrounded by the smell of pine and fresh-cut wood, than sit across from a stranger making small talk and pretending I enjoyed myself.

Then Derek texted me on Friday night: blind date, Sunday, 3:00 p.m., Lakeview Coffee by the water. I immediately knew I was in trouble. My friends had tried things like this before, including signing me up for speed dating, where I’d once spent twenty minutes listening to a woman talk about her pet iguana like it was her child. So when Derek promised I’d thank them later, I agreed with one condition: if this turned into another iguana situation, he’d be buying drinks for a month.

Sunday arrived too quickly. I was behind my cabin, halfway through sanding a cedar chair, with sawdust on my arms and Harley, my rescue mutt, sprawled across the workshop floor. My cabin sat near the edge of Colorado Springs against a hill covered in pines. It was small, wooden, and creaky during winter, but it was mine. Most evenings meant sitting on the porch with a beer, listening to wind move through the trees. No drama. No noise. Just the life I’d built myself.

That’s why the blind date I never wanted still felt like a prank waiting to happen. At 2:20, I considered bailing. I could claim my truck wouldn’t start or simply pretend I’d forgotten. But then my friends would call me scared, and something in me refused to give them that satisfaction.

I washed my hands and changed into clean jeans, a flannel shirt, and my scuffed work boots. Harley followed me toward the door as if he wanted to join the adventure, but I told him to guard the cabin and headed out alone.

The drive to Lakeview Coffee took about twenty minutes. As I got closer, I kept expecting to spot Derek’s truck outside with my friends waiting behind a camera to capture whatever humiliation they’d planned.

Instead, everything looked normal.

Families walked beside the lake. Couples occupied benches. A man jogged past with a golden retriever. Inside the coffee shop, wooden beams framed huge windows overlooking water that reflected the pale blue sky. The room smelled of roasted coffee beans and cinnamon.

I ordered black coffee and chose a table near the window.

Three o’clock came.

Then 3:05.

Then 3:10.

I kept staring at my phone, expecting an explanation. There were no messages or updates. By 3:15, I was convinced my friends really had left me sitting there as the punchline of their joke.

I grabbed my coffee and stood to leave.

That’s when the door chimed.

I looked up, expecting Derek or one of my buddies to walk through laughing.

Instead, a woman entered.

She looked close to forty, with brown hair pulled into a loose bun and soft strands curling around her neck. A long floral dress moved gently around her as she walked, paired with a warm cream-colored cardigan. She wasn’t flashy or loud. There was something calm about her presence that somehow made the entire room seem quieter.

Then her eyes found mine.

She didn’t look away.

She walked directly toward my table, stopped in front of me with a warm smile, and said one word that made my heart skip:

“Zane?”
