After Finding Out My Wife Was Sleeping With Her Boss, I Sent A Revenge Cake To Her Office With A Picture Of Them Together Printed On It.

Learning that his wife was sleeping with her boss was only the beginning of a marriage unraveling in ways he never expected.

After finding out his wife was sleeping with her boss, a 32-year-old husband found himself looking back at five years of marriage and wondering how the woman he loved had become a complete stranger. When they first met, they were both established in their careers and seemed to share the same values. He had gone to trade school, worked difficult entry-level jobs, and eventually built such a strong reputation in coding that his professional references mattered more than his formal education. His wife, meanwhile, had a graduate degree and worked in management. Their different career paths created what he initially considered harmless tension.

He had never hidden his frustration with middle management. After dealing with managers who treated developers as interchangeable, imposed unreasonable deadlines, promised unrealistic features to clients, and allowed projects to spiral in scope, he often came home complaining. His wife consistently defended the managers, even though she had never met his. Eventually, he learned that discussing his workday with her usually led nowhere, so unless the subject involved a raise or time off, he stopped bringing it up.

There was another tension beneath the surface. He believed she resented the fact that he had never returned to school for a four-year or graduate degree. She had pushed him about further education before they married, but backed off after he showed her the loans and debt it would require. They entered their marriage relatively debt-free and with similar earning power. Then his career improved dramatically. About two years earlier, he joined a company whose owner recognized his potential, and he eventually began earning roughly 50 percent more than his wife.

Despite those differences, the first four years of their marriage were largely happy. They went on date nights several times each month, shared hobbies, cooked meals together, read books together, and watched movies side by side.

Then lockdown arrived.

Both began working from home in their spacious house. He already had a home office, so another spare bedroom was converted into one for her. Yet being under the same roof all day didn’t bring them closer. Instead, their completely different approaches to working from home highlighted a growing divide.

He treated each workday almost like going into a real office. He got up, made breakfast, showered, shaved, dressed in a suit—even though he hated suits and ties—and entered his office mentally prepared to work. His wife took a much more relaxed approach, wearing a T-shirt and sweatpants and playing Candy Crush on her iPad between emails.

Then something seemingly minor became strangely important.

He closed his office door during his short daily scrum meeting because he wanted peace and concentration. She kept her own door open during her meetings. Five months earlier, she suddenly told him she felt insulted by his closed door and suggested he might be hiding something.

He explained himself, but the emotional distance kept growing. When he tried maintaining their shared hobbies, she dismissed the effort because, in her view, they already saw each other all day.

Things worsened when her company partially reopened its office.

She eagerly volunteered to return. Soon she was staying after work with coworkers and going to gatherings and drinks at their homes. When he asked questions, she became secretive, guarded, and increasingly cold.

He no longer felt as though he had a wife. He felt as though he had a roommate.

Then, one weekend, she placed her old iPad on his desk and casually asked him to wipe it so she could give it to her niece. Handling family technology was normal for him, so the request initially seemed completely ordinary.

She left for another company gathering.

He switched on the iPad.

And this time, instead of immediately erasing everything, he looked.
