We’ll Pay You Nothing My Mom Said To My 14-Year-Old. You Really Thought You’d Get Money? How Pathetic My Sister Laughed In Her Face.

When my family refused to pay my daughter after weeks of work at their restaurant, the missing money wasn’t what hurt her most—it was the way they laughed in her face. I kept my anger under control as she told me what happened, but one detail made it impossible for me to treat this like an ordinary family disagreement.

When my family refused to pay my daughter, I didn’t learn about it through an angry phone call or an argument at their restaurant. I learned because my 14-year-old, Molly, was sitting silently on our couch, facing the wall. Normally I’d hear a video playing, a snack bag crinkling, or her thumbs tapping on her phone. That afternoon there was nothing—and the silence felt wrong before I even knew why.

Molly wasn’t scrolling or pretending to do homework. Her phone, which was practically another limb at her age, wasn’t even in sight. Her shoulders were pulled tight, and her swollen eyes looked exhausted. I put down my bag carefully, sat beside her without crowding her, and gently asked what was wrong. She gave me the automatic answer children sometimes use when they’re trying to protect you: “Nothing.”

I didn’t push. I told her I was right there and she could take her time. Molly tried to hold herself together, but eventually her face crumpled. Then she finally said it: they weren’t going to pay her. At first, my brain almost refused to process the sentence. I asked what she meant, and Molly quietly named the two people responsible—her grandmother and her Aunt Belle.

I already knew Molly had been working at their restaurant. It had been part of her first month of summer break. She’d had scheduled shifts and carried herself with the pride of a teenager earning her own money.

So I assumed there had to be a misunderstanding.

Maybe the payment was simply late.

Molly shook her head.

She’d asked the previous week and had been told she’d receive it later. She asked again and received the same answer. Then payday arrived. After finishing her shift, she politely approached them and asked whether they had time to pay her.

That was when her grandmother laughed.

Molly’s voice broke as she repeated what she’d been told: they would pay her nothing.

Then came Aunt Belle’s reaction.

According to Molly, Belle mocked her for actually believing she would be paid and called her pathetic. The cruelty wasn’t delivered in anger. They apparently treated Molly’s expectation of receiving wages as though it were something amusing.

My daughter stared down at her hands while explaining that they’d told her she was family and therefore had merely been “helping.”

But she’d worked there full-time for a month.

The humiliation went deeper. They’d also told Molly that her work hadn’t even been good. I could see what those words were doing to her. The missing money hurt, but having adults she trusted dismantle something she’d been proud of hurt even more.

Then Molly revealed another detail.

They’d pointed out that she had no written contract, as though that made her foolish for expecting the salary she’d been promised.

I picked up my phone.

I told Molly I wasn’t going to yell. I simply needed to hear it directly from her grandmother.

Mom answered normally.

I asked whether Molly was telling me the truth.

There was a pause.

Then Mom confirmed it.

They weren’t paying her.

I reminded her that Molly had been promised money for the work she’d done. Mom dismissed the promise as a joke. Molly was family, she said, and she’d merely been helping. According to her, the “experience” should have been enough.

Then she criticized Molly’s work.

I could feel my daughter shrinking beside me as she listened.

But when my mother brought up the lack of a contract and calmly asked what I thought I could possibly do about it, something inside me changed.

I didn’t become louder.

I became completely still.
