The First Time I Brought A Boyfriend Home, My Mom Asked Him, In Front Of Everyone, “Aren’t You Worried You’ll Fall For Her Prettier, Slimmer Sister Instead?”

The first time I brought my boyfriend home, my mom compared me to my sister and asked if he was worried he would fall for her instead. I had spent two weeks hoping the dinner would go well, but one cruel question was enough to turn the entire table silent.

The first time I brought a boyfriend home, my mom compared me to my sister in the most humiliating way possible. I was twenty-two, his name was Wade, and I had spent two weeks convincing myself that dinner with my family would be fine. Then my mother, Lorna, looked directly at him and asked whether he was worried he might eventually fall for my prettier, slimmer sister instead. It wasn’t an innocent question. My mother had spent years turning comparisons between Marnie and me into something that followed us everywhere.

Growing up, Marnie had always been “the pretty one,” while I was “the smart one.” Mom delivered both descriptions as if she were reading medical results. When I was eleven, she warned me to watch my weight because I didn’t have Marnie’s figure to fall back on. At family gatherings, she would stand us beside each other so relatives could see the difference. Somehow, she still acted surprised that Marnie and I barely called each other as adults. Dad usually witnessed everything from the other end of the table and responded with little more than a tired sigh.

For the first twenty minutes of Wade’s dinner with my family, everything was surprisingly normal. He complimented the food and talked with Dad about work. Then Mom calmly put down her fork and asked Wade if she could ask him something. She wanted to know whether he worried that he might fall in love with Marnie instead because Marnie was slimmer and prettier than “my other one.” The table went completely silent. Even Marnie immediately demanded to know what was wrong with her.

Mom dismissed the reaction with a wave of her hand. According to her, she was only being realistic. Men had eyes, she explained, and Wade might as well understand what he was choosing now rather than discover it later.

Dad finally told her that was enough, but he used the same exhausted tone that had never stopped her before. Mom simply insisted that she was being honest.

I could have cried.

Part of me suspected that was exactly what she wanted. Instead, I looked straight at her and said I wasn’t a jealous person—unlike some people. Mom’s smile immediately tightened. We both understood what I meant. This was the woman who had spent twenty years ranking her own daughters and keeping score.

Marnie understood too.

When Mom pretended not to know what I meant, I told her she did. Marnie immediately backed me up and pointed directly at her: I meant Mom.

The atmosphere around the dinner table shifted. Wade hadn’t introduced this subject. Dad hadn’t introduced it. I hadn’t introduced it. Mom had deliberately asked my boyfriend whether he might prefer my sister, and now everyone was finally looking directly at the person who had started it.

Mom responded exactly as she always did when challenged. Suddenly, she was the victim. She announced that she was being attacked in her own home simply for being honest.

That word—“honest”—had protected her for years.

Every cruel comment became honesty, while anyone hurt by it was simply too sensitive.

Then Wade quietly set down his glass.

Since everyone was apparently being honest, he decided to answer her question himself. He told Mom that he had asked me out because I was the most interesting person he had ever met. He had known Marnie for barely an hour, so he couldn’t understand how he was supposed to suddenly fall for someone he didn’t know instead of the woman he had already chosen.

Mom still refused to stop.

She told him he might feel differently someday.

But Wade wasn’t finished. After watching my mom compared me to my sister right in front of him, he turned the question back on her. Why, he wanted to know, would any mother deliberately encourage her daughter’s boyfriend to imagine himself with her other daughter?

And what exactly was she hoping would happen?

For once, Mom needed an answer.

There didn’t seem to be a good one.
