My Dad Said, “I Don’t Know Why You’re Being So Difficult.” After I Refused To Give My Condo To My Brother. So I Looked At Him And Replied…

Dad Wants My Condo for Brother because apparently working remotely means I no longer deserve the downtown home I bought with my own money. What started as a few dismissive comments soon became a family demand I never imagined I’d have to defend myself against.

Dad Wants My Condo for Brother sounds like an outrageous family demand, but that was exactly the situation I found myself facing after three years of building a life in the downtown home I’d purchased with my own money. I’d landed a promising job at a tech company, saved enough for a substantial down payment, and never missed a mortgage payment. My 1,400-square-foot condo was in a prime location within walking distance of restaurants, parks, and my company’s office. It wasn’t something anyone had given me. I’d worked for it.

My father had never completely respected my career. After four decades working construction, he tended to view anything done on a computer as “playing around.” Even when I bought the condo, he’d commented that it seemed too nice for someone my age. I brushed those remarks aside until my company switched from hybrid work to fully remote. I converted my second bedroom into a proper home office with dual monitors and a standing desk, became more productive than ever, and even earned a promotion. Somehow, my success only gave Dad a new reason to question why I deserved my home.

About a month ago, his comments turned into what felt like a campaign. Since I no longer commuted to an office, Dad repeatedly argued that I didn’t really need to live downtown. According to him, the location was being wasted on someone who “sits at home all day.” Then he began talking about my older brother James, a regional sales manager who lived in the suburbs with his wife Patricia and their two children. James had a 45-minute daily commute, and Dad suddenly couldn’t stop explaining why my brother needed my location more than I did.

Dad pointed out that living downtown would cut James’s commute dramatically. He talked about the better school district for my nephews and repeatedly emphasized that James had a “real job” requiring him to appear at an office every day.

I’d already explained the obvious. I bought the condo myself. My job was real—and actually paid more than James’s. I regularly used the restaurants, gym, cultural events, and other amenities around me. Working remotely didn’t somehow erase my right to decide where I wanted to live.

None of it mattered to Dad.

In his view, I was selfishly “hogging” prime real estate when my computer-based job supposedly allowed me to live anywhere. That attitude was insulting enough, but the situation finally exploded during Sunday dinner at my parents’ house.

Dad didn’t ask me to consider helping James.

He announced that I should “do the right thing” and arrange a trade with him.

His proposal was almost unbelievable. I would give up my downtown condo so James could take over the mortgage. In exchange, I would move into a cabin my parents owned two hours outside the city.

Dad presented the idea as perfect for everyone. The isolated cabin would supposedly give me peace and quiet for remote work, while James would get the downtown location his family “actually” needed.

I laughed at first because I genuinely thought he was joking.

He wasn’t.

The comparison made no sense. The cabin had unreliable internet, was two hours away from my friends and social life, and was a roughly 900-square-foot seasonal cottage compared with my 1,400-square-foot year-round condo. Even the property values weren’t remotely comparable.

Dad dismissed every objection with one cutting remark: none of that mattered because I supposedly never left the house anyway.

I finally lost my patience. I told him the proposal was insulting and made it clear that his attitude showed how little he respected what I did for a living. As far as I was concerned, the discussion was finished.

But apparently, the fact that Dad Wants My Condo for Brother wasn’t something the rest of my family considered unreasonable.

After I left, Mom began texting me that I’d overreacted and should at least consider the proposal because “family helps family.” James remained strangely silent, while his wife Patricia posted on Facebook about hoping for “new opportunities,” complete with a crossed-fingers emoji.

Suddenly, I couldn’t tell whether Dad had simply made an absurd suggestion—or whether my family already believed a decision about my home had been made without me.
